Blanket Fabric Types and Their Properties

There are many blanket fabrics as well as color and model variations. So, what are the types of blanket fabrics that are so important for winter days? In terms of content diversity; acrylic, polyester and cotton blankets can be preferred. In terms of both ease of use and keeping you warm, the most preferred types of blankets are:

  • Mink Blanket

The word mink means “fur”. However, mink blankets are not made of fur. This type of blanket is called mink because it is as soft as fur and keeps you warm. One of the important things about the mink blanket is that only if the raw material used in these blankets is of good quality, they may be qualified as quality. Mink blankets require delicate washing. Bleaching materials should not be used for cleaning and the blankets should not be left wet.

Mink blankets are usually produced using acrylic and polyester. In their production, 15% polyester and 85% acrylic which provide soft texture and warmth are used. The mink blankets are produced with high-quality acrylic and they do not make any electrification in addition to keeping you soft and warm.

  • Cotton Blanket

Cotton blankets are one of the indispensable types of blankets of winter days due to their soft and comfortable fabrics. You can have a comfortable sleeping experience by choosing the cotton blanket model that suits your taste. In addition, the cotton TV blanket, which has become the fashion of recent times, does not make you feel alone while enjoying. This type of blanket is usually woven on dobby and jacquard looms. In addition, they are mostly checked and feature single or double layers. They are also preferred because of their lightweight.

  • Wool Blanket

Wool blankets are preferred more because it is beneficial for our health. Angora, lamb, cashmere, and camel feathers are used to produce such wool. Wool blanket features such as temperature control and water vapor absorption provide a more relaxing sleep. Wool blankets also support regular heartbeats.

  • Fleece Blanket

A circular knitting system is used in fleece blankets produced by using fleece fiber. Nowadays, fleece blankets are among the most preferred blanket types because they are light, soft and easy to wash and dry. These blankets are one of the types of blankets decorated with different prints.

  • Woven Blanket

These blankets are produced by weaving on dobby and jacquard looms. Woven blankets usually produced with plaid patterns are produced in single or double layers.

  • Electric Blanket

These blankets, which are mostly used in the old times, are generally used by laying down. Inside the blanket, there is an electrically operated heating device which can be adjusted by the control switch. When using an electric blanket, it is absolutely necessary to lay a sheet to avoid direct contact. You should also ensure that the blanket is not plugged in during sleep. This blanket is not suitable for infants, children and incontinent elderly as it may cause problems during contact with liquid media.

  • Wearable Blanket

It is a blanket that has emerged in recent years. As the name suggests, it can be worn on you like a dress. Wearable blankets produced in different colors and designs are especially useful when watching television.

Mink Blanket Fabric

Mink blankets are among the most popular types of blankets today. These blankets are called mink because they are similar to mink, or “fur”. The fur is a soft-textured product that heats very well. It is also possible to see these features in mink blankets.

These types of blankets are produced using acrylic fiber especially in Turkey, Korea, Spain, and China. In fact, the quality of mink blankets is closely related to the material from which they are produced. Normally produced with 85% acrylic 15% yarn, these blankets are registered with the OEKO-TEX certificate.

Acrylic Fiber for Mink Blankets

Acrylic is a colorless acid with a pungent odor and formed by oxidation. Polymers resulting from exposure of such acid to heat, light or metals are also referred to as “acrylic”. In chemistry, the formula of acrylic is CH 2 = CH COOH. Acrylic is the starting material for the production of polymers. Among the artificial fibers used in the textile industry, it is the most similar fabric to wool. According to the definitions of ISO (International Standards Organization) and BISFA (International Synthetic Fiber Standardization Bureau), fibers containing at least 85% acrylonitrile in their chemical structure are called acrylic fibers. With the increasing need for wool in the world, it has been found as a result of the studies for the development of artificial fibers that are similar to wool and have the properties of wool.

The first Acrylic fiber was developed in the laboratory by Du Pont in the USA in the 1940s, produced in the pilot plant in 1945, and was launched under the patent name ORLON since 1950. Orlon, which was previously produced as a homopolymer by polymerization of 100% acrylonitrile, has been converted into a copolymer by adding a second monomer because it is hard and brittle and difficult to dye and its properties have been made suitable for use in textile. Acrylonitrile and comonomer polymerization of acrylic fibers are produced by wet and dry drafting systems. Acrylic can be used as 100% or mixed with other raw materials and suitable for melange.

The acrylic fabric has very close properties to wool. It is also very similar to cotton. When you touch or look at a product made of acrylic fabric, it gives you the feeling of wool or cotton. It is easily washable and has very low stain retention. At the same time, acrylic fabrics have the ability to retain their shape for a long time. Various insects, such as moth, do not come to this kind of fabric. Acrylic fabrics, which have the ability to hold all kinds of colors in a very good way, are highly resistant to sunlight and adverse weather conditions.

Polyester Fiber for Mink Blanket

Polyester is an artificial fiber used in the textile industry. Polyester is a category of polymers or more particularly condensation polymers containing ester functional groups in their parent bonds. Although polyesters are found in nature, polyester generally refers to a broad family of synthetic polyesters containing all polyethylene terephthalate and polycarbonate. The word polyester refers to a fabric generally made of polyester fiber. Polyester fibers are often used together with cotton fibers to produce garments with better properties. Polyester fabric has found wide use in the textile industry. Various fabrics such as taffeta, organza, and satin are produced from polyester yarn which can be used alone or mixed with other fibers.

Mostly blended with cotton fibers, polyester fibers can be used with wool, acrylic, silk, viscose and linen fibers. Polyester fibers are the most widely used synthetic fibers today. It is a fiber that is easy to obtain and has properties close to natural fibers. It is the artificial fiber that has the properties closest to cotton, and polyester fibers have become more prominent with the increasing need for cotton. The polyester obtained by condensation of a dicarboxylic acid with a dialchol is examined in 3 groups in terms of chemical structure.

  • Group 1 PET (polyethylene terephthalate) fibers,
  • Group 2 PCDT (poly-1.4 cyclohexyl-dimethylene-terephthalate) fibers,
  • Group 3 Modified (new) polyester fibers.

PET polyester fibers are obtained according to two methods. In the first, ethylene glycol and dimethyl terephthalate are used as starting materials. In the second method, ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid are used as starting materials. The polymerized raw material is removed by cooling in the polymerization vessel and produced by cutting into small pieces. Polymers are melted at 260 ° C and melted to form a filament by soft spinning. These filaments are then subjected to a tensile drawing process to increase their strength. Polyester fabric has different usage areas, especially blankets, bedspreads, tablecloths, pillows, duvet covers, curtain fabrics, and carpets. It is also used in fishing nets, automobile tires, ropes, sewing threads, and sailcloth.

The Relaxing Effect of Mink Blankets

Blankets are often used to protect against the effects of cold weather during the winter months. However, it is important that these products keep body temperature in balance and have a soft texture. Otherwise, they do not warm you as expected, and those made of poor quality materials may pose a health hazard. Mink blankets, on the other hand, have a relaxing effect at the same time with their soft tissues and their ability to balance body temperature. Again a quality mink blanket can be used without deforming for many years. In this sense, they contribute to the budget of individuals.

There are many types of these comfortable and useful blankets. There are different models for children as well as double and single models. Among these models, you can buy the blanket of your favorite color and model and you can be protected from the effects of cold weather in winter. One of the most useful mink blanket models is kangaroo blankets. With the mink’s warm-keeping effect and soft texture, these blankets have become particularly popular in recent years. This type of blanket, also known as a wearable blanket, does not allow you to catch a cold on cold winter days. You can use a variety of kangaroo blankets while reading a book, sipping your coffee in front of the TV and even outdoors. Mink kangaroo blankets are available in different colors for both men and women. These products, which can be easily washed in a washing machine, are also easy to maintain. You can also buy kangaroo blankets at home to easily warm-up and save energy.

Cotton Blanket Fabric

Cotton fabric, which is the most popular fabric used in versatile fabrics, is a natural fiber. Cotton fibers are thought to have been used since ancient times. Cotton is a natural substance obtained by bending long, fibrous hairs that surround the seeds of the cotton plant. These fibers vary in length and thickness and are absorbent, making cotton soft and comfortable to wear. Cotton fabrics are commonly worn in warm climates because they keep you cool.

Cotton is a kind of natural vegetable fiber and is obtained from the cocoons of the cotton plant. Cotton is chemically composed of cellulose consisting of cotton wax, oil and cotton fibers. Cotton fibers are thought to have been used since ancient times. Cotton yarn is a natural substance obtained by twisting long, fibrous hairs that surround the seeds of the cotton plant. These fibers vary in length and thickness and are absorbent, making cotton soft and comfortable to wear.

Cotton fabrics are widely worn in warm climates because of their breathable structure because they keep you cool. The flexibility of the cotton is strong and durable. Factors that distinguish cotton from other fibers include absorbency when wet, strength, and softness. For this reason, cotton fabric is usually preferred in blankets, underwear, home textiles, socks, pajamas and so on. Cotton fabrics are suitable for washing in hot water. They can be dried by hanging. If they are ironed when they are moist, their crease is opened more quickly. That is why they are ironed with a hot steam iron when they are dry.

When synthetic and cotton fabrics are mixed, they become less wrinkled and easily ironable. When washed, the cotton fabrics dry late due to the fibers in them: because of the high water absorption, they hardly lose moisture and dry late. It absorbs moisture well and keeps the heat cool by moving it out of the body. It does not generate static electricity. The cotton fabric keeps good dyeing in the production stage. If it is not pre-treated, it usually shrinks when washed. If it is exposed to mold and sunlight for a long time, it deteriorates. It is more robust when wet compared to the dry state. It wrinkles more easily than synthetic fabrics and requires ironing. It is easy to clean but easily contaminated.

Wool Blanket Fabric

Wool is a valuable textile material that exhibits superior clothing physiology such as fineness, length, elasticity, and folding ability, as well as good heat retention, high moisture absorption, low wettability and felting ability, which best adjusts body-environment relations. These superior properties of wool are due to its complex chemical structure and combined biological structure system. Wool, the representative of keratin proteins, is formed by the combination of over twenty amino acids in various forms. Recent research has shown that wool is not only composed of corneous substances called Keratin but also contains about 20% non-Keratin substances and other large and small substances.

Wool is called the broken, washed and cleaned wool fleece covering the sheep. However, in a broader sense, many hair groups obtained from the backs of some other animals which are used in practice are called wool. However, in order to be able to use this hair in the textile industry, they must have sufficient length and fineness to allow them to be bent and bent over each other. Wool fibers obtained from sheep are the best examples of these and are justified in terms of both quantity and prevalence of animal textile materials. The most important wool-producing countries are Turkey, Austria, Russia, China, New Zealand, India, Bangladesh, Argentina, South Africa, and the USA. There are many sheep breeds. In the past, most woolly sheep have been the Spanish Merino. These are not animals fed for their meat but for the plenty of wool they have. In the 18th century, the Merinos were brought to Germany, Austria, England, and Russia, where they were hybridized with local sheep breeds. These are called crossbred or hybrid. Cheviot wool, on the other hand, was obtained by crossing the sheep of South Scotland.

Woolen fabrics are healthy fabric types that can be used easily in all climates. Wool is a natural yarn obtained from sheep species. The best wool is obtained from short hairs. Long hairs are used to make thick fabrics. There are various types of special wools. These species include goat hair, alpaca, mohair, angora, and cashmere. Special wools are very soft and expensive because they are produced in very small quantities. These wools are mixed with sheep wool to add shine and increase the curves of the fabric. The properties of wool fabrics are;

  • Used in all climates as well as in many weights and weaves
  • Keeps warm in winter and cool in summer, because wool makes the body breathable and healthy.
  • It absorbs moisture better than other natural fibers.
  • It is fire-resistant.
  • It is relatively resistant to wrinkles.
  • It is suitable for tailoring as it can be easily shaped with steam.
  • It is felt if exposed to excessive heat, humidity, and pressure.
  • Sunlight, moth, bleach and improper ironing can damage the wool fabric.

Polar Fleece Blanket Fabric

Every detail used in the clothing sector is based on seasonal characteristics. And the selected fabrics have character suitable for seasonal weather changes. With its warm and soft properties in cold weather in winter, polar fabrics can be used under any clothing category from gloves to tracksuits as well as blankets. Among the properties of the fleece fabric is the production source of the soft air-permeable structure, such as synthetic fibers, resin, and plastic. These materials are effective in expelling moisture from the body and acting as a kind of insulation for protecting your body from the cold. It is a kind of quick-drying fabric and with its healthy feature, it can be the most important complement of intensive sports activities.

There are many kinds of microfiber structure mixed with different yarns are gaining different features. The lycra fleece fabric features 10 percent elastane material and creates clothing products that can provide flexibility especially for sportswear. Patterned fleece fabric options are used for aesthetic appearance, as a material that provides protection at the same time does not lint. On the other hand, the two sides are made of polar fabrics and nothing is lost from the air permeability. Fleece varieties with jacquard towels are generally used in the morning and bathing areas. The range of polar fabrics produced with micro yarns is the first-class quality option.

In particular, the smoothness of the outer surface of this fabric and the absence of drawbacks such as shrinking-wear as it is washed over time makes the micro-polar fabrics most preferred. It is also used in sportswear as the main material for healthy products with its quality. With flock technology, flock fleece fabric options emerge in polar fabrics and contain very important protective and healthy properties for outerwear products. While Membrane technology adds liquid and wind impermeability to polar fabrics, techno varieties produce more effective results. With the leather appearance and fashion functionality, special designs can be obtained with interesting features. Embossing kind of fleece fabric can be used in outerwear as well as in sportswear with its patterned feature.

Anti-bacterial uses, which are among the Softec fleece fabric properties, can also be a very healthy option against allergies. As in all areas, original products are healthy, do not deform as they are washed and contain air permeability, however, in non-original products deformations can start with color changes from the first wash and those may become more dangerous with their health-hazardous properties. Fleece production materials, which give soft blanket its name, are sourced from special products with their smoothness as well as air permeability features. Fleece fabrics, which are among the favorite of sportswear with their comfort, are mostly preferred with their healthy and warm properties for clothing such as blankets, jackets, tracksuits, scarves, and beanies.

Blankets should be washed according to the type and according to the washing instructions. Seasonal conditions should also be considered when washing blankets. You should clean your blankets before entering winter due to late drying or staying moist conditions as well as upon entering the summer months when you will put it to the shelves.

A cleaning in winter can annoy you in terms of drying. After you decide which program to wash, you can wash your blanket in your washing machine. Some winter blankets may not fit into your machine due to their size. Therefore, you may need to hand wash your blanket. A bathtub or a large basin can be used when washing the blanket. It is filled with water at a temperature that will not burn hands. The water is foamed with the help of non-bleaching detergent and the blanket is put into water and pressed.

Keep the blanket for 1-2 hours in foamy water and repeat the process until the water in the tub is clear. The blanket in the water can be rubbed or trampled down. Small amounts of ammonia can be used to make the blanket washing process more hygienic. You can also remove stains using vinegar if there are stains on your blanket.
